Health Volunteering Program for Medical Students
Within this program, volunteers make a genuine contribution to staff working within Peruvian's hospitals, health clinics – medical centres and NGOs. Volunteers are needed to assist the populations residing in the poorest urban and rural areas.
What kind of skills do I need?
Volunteers must posses some proof of healthcare certification, such as an ID as a medical student, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. It's necessary to have an intermediate Spanish level in order to give local people as much help as possible.
Your role as a volunteer
Depending on your medical experience and Spanish language skills you may be asked to assist with various procedures such as suturing wounds, giving vaccinations, helping with taking vital signs of patients, being involved in the daily procedures of medical centres – observing or directly providing various sorts of assistance to existing doctors and nurses.
Volunteers may also be expected to assist in maintaining files, providing assistance to the reception desk as well as in nurseries, routine patient check-ups, measure blood pressure, body temperature, record patients' height, weight, and more.
You can work in different areas and topics:
- Public Medical Centers
- Public Hospitals
- Health Campaigns
- Geriatric centers
- sexual health, personal hygiene, and family planning.
IMPORTANT: We have to emphasize that our organisation does not offer any placement to volunteer as professionals; neither are permitted to perform major diagnoses or big surgical duties. Volunteers will assist doctors – usually within the capacity of an assistant.

Volunteers are accommodated in a single or double bedroom according to availability with a shared and clean bathroom with hot showers. As a guest you will have plenty of opportunities to practice your conversation and comprehension skills with the family. In addition, you will observe and participate in everyday Peruvian life and culture.
