Earthquake Recovery Program (Awaiting Angels Volunteer Program - Peru)

Tell a Friend
Earthquake Recovery Program [Building]
On August 15th a powerful earhquake shook Peru, killing at least 1,000 people and leaving another 1,350 injured. In the hard-hit port city of Pisco a cathedral was destroyed while some 300 people were inside attending mass. In addition to the killed and injured, more than 16,500 people have been displaced or otherwise affected by the quake.
The hardest hit areas were south of Lima in the Ica, Chincha and Pisco regions. The earthquake, whose magnitude was variously estimated at 7.7 to 7.9 on the Richter scale, was centred off Peru's Pacific shore. The cities were without electricity and hundreds of families are sleeping on the streets outside their ruined homes. Over the next few months, volunteers will be living and working with the people of Pisco to recover and rebuild their communities. As the city is completely destroyed, we recommend staying as a maximum of 3 weeks.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will be placed in our volunteer residence.
What kind of skills do I need?
Special skills are not required. However, volunteers should enjoy being outdoors, have an interest in manual labour and should not be afraid to get dirty. Also is mandatory to be in good health. Commitment involves hard physical work and living conditions of the placement will be very basic with limited running water.
Your role as a volunteer
Volunteers are needed to help rebuild as many as possible houses, schools, hospitals, etc for local families.
The work will include various tasks such as helping to load bricks and mixing cement, demolishing the last houses and schools before they can be rebuilt, removing rubble and digging foundations for new houses.
Working hours:
This program can involve full days of work but schedules vary day to day.
Spanish level
Since you will be communicating with people who do not speak English, a basic level of Spanish is recommended, but not required.
